Northern Lights in Iceland: The 15 Best Tours

35 reviewed

Aurora hunting runs September to April, and your choice of tour decides how far from the city glow you end up. Compared here: coach tours against small-group jeeps and harbour boats, which operators re-book you free on a blank night, how late each runs, plus the price of a clear-sky evening.

“Sunny was super cool! (And the driver who’s name I forgot to ask 🌹) 🫶🏻 It was a spectacular experience, 30 min of Aurora Boreale above our heads. Baked eye: white shimmering curtain crossing the sky (not yet night time, stars were showing, sun was setting). Through my iPhone 11 camera, wow colours and astonishment, truly amazing, green and purple, what a show. Wowowowowow thank you for this experience 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩”

“It was not a very successful trip but we still saw faint green light. However this isn't why I'm rating this as 1 star. The tour guide Michaela PROMISED to share photos with us which had little aurora lights in the background. The tour company EastWest are now claiming it was an unsuccessful tour and refuse to share OUR photos, OUR memories with us via email as promised. Very disappointing experience false promises I'm still waiting for these photos, as I will not get a retrial as we will not be returning to Iceland again. Shame even our photos and memories we can't have”

“Booked on the trip the first night we got to Iceland. It was cancelled & the cancellation email had gone into my junk folder so check there before you go as we walked for 20 mins to be turned away. Back the next night without any messing they just moved the ticket from the night before. Herded onto a large bus with lots of others but was comfortable & warm & tour guide Freda was brilliant, funny, knowledgeable & I think more excited than we were. Drove for an hour & the driving was a little scary in parts but got there in one piece & lights were fantastic. Then…”

Golden Circle by day and Northern Lights by night from Reykjavik. Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss, plus aurora coaching and camera tips.

“Excellent value for money. This combo tour worked out much cheaper than doing 2 individual tours and saved us around £30 each. The golden circle tour was great, however it isn’t as long as advertised. We started at 8am and we were back in Reykjavik at 3pm, so we should’ve done the 10am start really as we would’ve still easily made the northern lights tour start time of 8pm. This is no problem as we had enough time at everything. Northern lights was cancelled 2 nights in a row due to the weather, it was actually just too cloudy so I’m glad they didn’t waste our time, however on the…”
